No windsurfing possible for me, so took advantage of the warmest Feb av known! First time out on the road bike in months, although been using the indoor bike. Bought a Garmin explore bike computer off ebay last year so decided to try it out without reading the manual! Lost an hour sussing it! Gadget offers you 3 Garmin routes if you want to go random at the press of a button! Neat. I chose a 20 miler looping Sproughton Bramford Claydon Ipswich Tuddenham, Westerfield and back to home. Interesting because all its routes are either cycle paths biased or routes uploaded by Garmin connect cyclists. Def nice route, although some roads were so narrow I had to be very aware of nutter country drivers trying to overtake on bends.
I now monitor HR, Speed, and Cadence to ensure all rides are at a fitness level, but I struggled today in the first 20 mins, as first ride for months and never got above 17mph on level road, compared to last year hitting 20 mph for 2 or 3 miles on level road. HR was high for me on one hill hitting 153, but Av HR was 119 so ride was a workout for sure.
Tuddenham to Westerfield was great as the sat nav never failed, as I was clueless where I was heading, trusting this gadget to get me to Ipswich side of Henley. In fact I decided to take a wrong turn and sure enough it took me back on the same road further down. After 10 miles I started getting jaded, as I completely forgot food and water! They were still on the garden bench my wife phoned to inform me! I was also very hot having dressed for winter!
Hooked up with some other roadies who were as slow as I was, so tagged behind them but heavens what they must have thought as I stayed behind them, whilst they were waving me on!
This was a dreadful time trial but pleasant ride through the country. Normally 20 mls takes me around 1hr 25/30 mins, but this ended up 15 mins more, yet my HR was in the same zone as last year’s better rides, which shows how my fitness has collapsed. Also need to get shot of 6kg winter weight!
The bike went excellent and never slipped a gear so well chuffed. I did my own bike fit and after weeks of minor adjustments, I now have the road bike setup so, no knee, back, arse or wrist pain at all! I ride to music all the way and never get bored and even speeding up to upbeat sounds. Great first Feb ride and hope I can get a few more in before my foiling season starts.
